Annual Meeting, library closures, 16th Street, and more...
Join Us for the Annual Meeting!
🗓️ SHCA Annual Meeting - October 16, 2025 at 7:00 PM @ Slavens
It is nearly time for the Annual Meeting of the Southern Hills Community Association. This meeting is a chance for neighbors to gather and discuss issues relevant to the neighborhood. It is also an opportunity to vote on members of the SHCA Board.
We plan to discuss the accomplishments of the past year and plans for next year. We would like to put a special focus on ideas from the community for what else the SHCA can do to promote neighborhood connections in the coming year. Please come ready with ideas and enthusiasm to implement them with the Association’s help.
Please note that only paid members of the Southern Hills Community Association are eligible to vote on Directors and other topics. Join the SHCA now and pay your annual dues (only $25!) if you live in the neighborhood. If you live outside the Association area, please consider making a contribution, too! We also plan to collect dues at the meeting.

Updates from Slavens School
🚲 eBike Safety
Like many neighborhoods, ours has seen an increase in students riding E-Bikes—and not always in the safest ways. To help address this, we’ve partnered with the Denver Police Department and the Trauma Center to host an E-Bike Safety Assembly for our older students. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe in the community!
🚸 Become a Crossing Guard!
Do you want to help keep our students safe while making a positive impact on the Slavens community? We are looking for volunteers or paid crossing guards to assist with student safety during arrival and dismissal. This is a great way to get involved, help children keep safe, and even earn a little extra money.
New: We’re inviting fathers, father figures, and all caregivers to help students and families cross safely and start the day with a smile. Students benefit from seeing men model care, calm, and safety at school. Your presence at the curb sets a powerful tone—and it’s for everyone, not just dads. (Grandfathers, uncles, big brothers, neighbors, aunts, grandmothers, and all caregivers are encouraged, too!)
If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this opportunity, please reach out to Darcie Forde at [email protected]. Your help makes a difference!
Let’s Communicate! If you have concerns, compliments, or other thoughts about Slavens, the Association can share those with the school. Reply to this email or email us at [email protected]!
Four Denver Library Branches Temporarily Closing

Four Denver library branches will temporarily close starting later this year. Each of the libraries was already scheduled to close for renovations, but two of the shutdowns will start months early because the city is trying to save money amid budget challenges.
Here are the last scheduled days of service for each of the branches:
Hampden Branch Library - Saturday, Oct. 4
Ross-Broadway Branch Library - Saturday, Nov. 1
Eugene Field Branch Library - Wednesday, Nov. 26
Ross-University Hills Branch Library - Saturday, Dec. 20
Solid Waste Collection Schedule Changes

Thanksgiving
The week of November 24, Denver will not collect compost or recycling, as staff works a 24-hour workweek, observing Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 27, and the citywide furlough day on Friday, November 28.
Additionally, Thanksgiving week, Denver is asking ALL customers to set out their trash by 6 a.m. Monday, November 24 and DOTI will collect carts over the course of the 3-day workweek. Residents scheduled to receive Large Item Pickup service the week of November 24 should also set out their items by 6 a.m. Monday morning, November 24, for collection over the course of Monday through Wednesday.
Ongoing Recycling Shift in December
Following Thanksgiving - the week of December 1 - compost collection will resume, and Solid Waste will reset its recycling collection calendar as follows:
Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling Thanksgiving week (week of November 24) should set their carts out the week of December 1 instead, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.
Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling the week of December 1 should set out their recycling the week of December 8, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.
Ongoing Earlier Start Time
As part of another modification, it is making, and effectively immediately, DOTI is asking residents to set out their trash, recycling, and compost carts, and large item pickup items, by 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection day. Equipment operators are starting their day earlier, aiming to be on route earlier to better serve our city’s residents. Setting out carts the night before your collection day is also acceptable.
Updated collection schedules will display on the city’s website and Trash and Recycling App the week of December 1. Additionally, people can access this schedule change information at www.denvergov.org/trashschedule
