Southern Hills October '25 News

Neighborhood support by the numbers, fall/winter activities, and more...

Thank You for Attending the Annual Meeting!

Thanks to all of you who attended the Annual Meeting on October 16th. It was great to see everyone and to have such an in-depth conversation about southeast Denver with Councilwoman Diana Romero Campbell.

Reflecting on 2024-2025, we discussed how the Association met its goals of rebuilding the organization’s ability to operate, improving the Easter Egg Hunt and 4th of July Bike Parade, and holding a successful Annual Meeting.

Looking ahead to 2025-2026, we discussed the Association’s goal of continuing to improve operations, continuing to host the same events, and possibly adding more community events. We need your ideas and help for the last one!

We also successfully re-elected the board members with expiring terms. We do still have openings for a director in Filings 3 and 5 and an At-Large director.

If you have ideas for future events or are interested in one of the open board positions, please reply to this email or email [email protected].

SHCA Membership by the Numbers

Despite our decent-sized mailing list and a nice turnout at the Annual Meeting, the SHCA’s membership is much smaller than it could be. Here are the numbers:

Total Members: 68 of 560 possible properties in the neighborhood (see maps)

Filing 2: 7 of 79
Filing 3: 10 of 84
Filing 4: 15 of 123
Filing 5: 18 of 126
Filing 6: 14 of 122
Filing X: 4 of 26

Like the Easter Egg Hunt and 4th of July Bike Parade? Want to see us grow and potentially add more community events? Please join the SHCA and pay your annual dues if you live in the neighborhood. If you live outside the Association area, please consider making a contribution, too!

Updates from Slavens School

🚲 eBike Safety

Like many neighborhoods, ours has seen an increase in students riding E-Bikes—and not always in the safest ways. To help address this, we’ve partnered with the Denver Police Department and the Trauma Center to host an E-Bike Safety Assembly for our older students. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe in the community!

🚸 Become a Crossing Guard!

Do you want to help keep our students safe while making a positive impact on the Slavens community? We are looking for volunteers or paid crossing guards to assist with student safety during arrival and dismissal. This is a great way to get involved, help children keep safe, and even earn a little extra money.

New: We’re inviting fathers, father figures, and all caregivers to help students and families cross safely and start the day with a smile. Students benefit from seeing men model care, calm, and safety at school. Your presence at the curb sets a powerful tone—and it’s for everyone, not just dads. (Grandfathers, uncles, big brothers, neighbors, aunts, grandmothers, and all caregivers are encouraged, too!)

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this opportunity, please reach out to Darcie Forde at [email protected]. Your help makes a difference!

Let’s Communicate! If you have concerns, compliments, or other thoughts about Slavens, the Association can share those with the school. Reply to this email or email us at [email protected]!

Denver LeafDrop Program is Back!

Denver’s Office of the City Forester partners with Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) and Ace Hardware to provide compostable paper leaf bags and designated drop-off sites for Denver residents. Loose leaves and compostable leaf bags are also accepted in Denver's green compost carts.

You can download a coupon to receive 5 free compostable bags at an Ace Hardware store near you by visiting https://beasmartash.org/trees-matter/denver-leafdrop/.

Starting October 6, through November 21, the following LeafDrop locations are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m:

Cherry Creek Transfer Station – 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.)
Havana Nursery – 10450 Smith Rd. (enter on Smith Road)
Central Platte Campus – 1271 W. Bayaud Ave.

The following LeafDrop locations will be open on Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

Bruce Randolph High School – E. 40th Ave. and Steele St.
Cherry Creek Transfer Station – 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.)
Kennedy High School – Newland St. and Brown Pl.
Sloan’s Lake Northwest Parking Lot – W. Byron Pl. and Yates St.
Veterans Park – S. Vine St. and E. Iowa Ave.

Here are some other tips:

  • Refrain from including branches or other materials in your leaf bags

  • Don’t use twine or staples to secure paper leaf bags, just roll and crimp

  • Never rake or blow leaves into the streets; they can clog our storm sewer inlets and street sweepers.

  • If you are a current city compost customer, you can put leaves and pumpkins in your compost cart!

🎓 Imagine What’s Possible for District 4

Earlier this year, neighbors completed a community survey to share what matters most across District 4. Now, in partnership with Mariposa Analytics, we’re taking the next step with small-group focus conversations where residents can dive deeper and explore why these issues matter. Let’s build District 4’s future together. Groups will be limited to 10–12 participants to keep the conversation meaningful. Register to participate.

Solid Waste Collection Schedule Changes

Thanksgiving

The week of November 24, Denver will not collect compost or recycling, as staff works a 24-hour workweek, observing Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 27, and the citywide furlough day on Friday, November 28.

Additionally, Thanksgiving week, Denver is asking ALL customers to set out their trash by 6 a.m. Monday, November 24 and DOTI will collect carts over the course of the 3-day workweek. Residents scheduled to receive Large Item Pickup service the week of November 24 should also set out their items by 6 a.m. Monday morning, November 24, for collection over the course of Monday through Wednesday.

Ongoing Recycling Shift in December

Following Thanksgiving - the week of December 1 - compost collection will resume, and Solid Waste will reset its recycling collection calendar as follows:

  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling Thanksgiving week (week of November 24) should set their carts out the week of December 1 instead, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.

  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling the week of December 1 should set out their recycling the week of December 8, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.

Ongoing Earlier Start Time

As part of another modification, it is making, and effectively immediately, DOTI is asking residents to set out their trash, recycling, and compost carts, and large item pickup items, by 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection day. Equipment operators are starting their day earlier, aiming to be on route earlier to better serve our city’s residents. Setting out carts the night before your collection day is also acceptable.

Updated collection schedules will display on the city’s website and Trash and Recycling App the week of December 1. Additionally, people can access this schedule change information at www.denvergov.org/trashschedule

Under Construction

🦺 Hampden Multimodal Improvements

The Hampden Multimodal Improvement Project is helping implement a vision for Hampden Avenue developed with residents and businesses to improve safety and provide more comfortable and convenient crossings. The project will take place on Hampden Ave from I-25 to E. Girard Ave.

Some impacts to motorists will occur throughout the project with the majority happening during the construction of the raised median. When work begins mid-June, motorists can expect westbound lane closures on Hampden Avenue between Girard Avenue and Florence Street.

Working hours will be from 7am to 5pm weekdays. Some night work may occur.

Beginning in July, barriers will be placed on Hampden Avenue closing down a lane in each direction through August. Motorists should allow for extra time in their schedules for possible delays. Learn more.

🚧 High Line Canal Trail - Yale Roadway Improvements at Holly

March - Summer 2025: Xcel Energy and their contractor, Mears Group, Inc. will relocate approximately 1,200 feet of natural gas line along Yale Avenue, between Hudson Street/Service Road and Kearney Street. This work is to accommodate the upcoming High Line Canal Trail Underpass project and ensure natural gas system safely. Learn more.
