Updates from Slavens School

🎉 Our school community has something to celebrate!

We’re thrilled to share that our elementary school has been nominated in the Best of Westword Readers’ Choice Poll for 2026. That recognition reflects the incredible students, families, and educators who make our school so special. Thank you for being part of that success!

Now, we’d love your help shining a spotlight on another standout in our community: our middle school. We know how exceptional it is, and this is our chance to make sure the wider Denver community knows it too.

How you can help:

Voting is open now through March 9, 2026 and every vote and nomination makes a difference.

The Best of Denver® 2026 results—both editorial picks and Readers’ Choice winners—will be announced on March 26. Let’s show how strong our school community is by lifting up our elementary and middle school!

Thank you for your continued support and school pride—we couldn’t do this without you!

🚸 Become a Crossing Guard!

Do you want to help keep our students safe while making a positive impact on the Slavens community? We are looking for volunteers or paid crossing guards to assist with student safety during arrival and dismissal. This is a great way to get involved, help children keep safe, and even earn a little extra money.

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this opportunity, please reach out to Darcie Forde at [email protected]. Your help makes a difference!

Let’s Communicate! If you have concerns, compliments, or other thoughts about Slavens, the Association can share those with the school. Reply to this email or email us at [email protected]!

🚫 Lane Closures Ahead as DOTI Constructs Improvements for Pedestrians, People who Bike

Closure of on-ramp to Santa Fe NB from Evans for New Pedestrian Bridge

Starting Wednesday, January 21, and lasting for up to 12 weeks, DOTI, in coordination with CDOT, will close the on-ramp to northbound Santa Fe Drive at Evans Avenue. Detour routes will be posted and are shown on the attached map. The closure of the northbound on-ramp to Santa Fe Drive at Evans is required to accommodate construction of a pier that will support a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge being built at West Jewell Ave.

The new pedestrian bridge at Jewell Ave. will provide people a safe way to cross over Santa Fe Dr. and freight and RTD rail lines and a more comfortable alternative to using Evans Avenue, which is a busy corridor for cars. When completed, the 370-foot, 30-foot-high, and 12-foot-wide structure will connect neighborhoods east and west of Santa Fe Dr. and provide a new and convenient way to access the Evans Ave. RTD light rail station.

Stretch of Iowa Avenue Closes for Underpass Improvements

DOTI will begin making improvements to an underpass along Iowa Avenue east of Santa Fe Drive to make travel better for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project will reconstruct the existing sidewalk along the north side of the underpass, replacing the existing stairs with ramps, enhancing multimodal safety and connectivity between adjacent neighborhoods, providing ADA access, and making travel more comfortable. New lighting along the pathway is also planned, along with public art.

To ensure safety during demolition and reconstruction of the sidewalk, DOTI will need to fully close Iowa Avenue to cars in both directions between Acoma Street and Santa Fe Drive starting Monday, January 26, for about nine (9) months. Access will be maintained in the underpass for pedestrians and people who bike.

For both projects, alternate routes to Santa Fe northbound for drivers are Mississippi Avenue to the north and Dartmouth and Hampden avenues to the south.

🚶Denver's Sidewalk Implementation Plan

The Sidewalk Implementation Plan will detail the path forward for building and upgrading sidewalks across the city in both the short term and the long term. The purpose of the plan is to:

  • Create a prioritization framework for delivering sidewalks in a way that meets the City’s and the public’s transportation goals.

  • Create work plans for sidewalk construction, reconstruction, and repair across the city with a more detailed focus on what will be constructed in the next 6 years.

  • Establish a long-term road map for a successful program that delivers new and improved sidewalks to Denver into the future.

The Sidewalk Implementation Plan is kicking off now, with three main phases of development through the end of 2026: documenting the state of Denver’s sidewalk network today, developing an understanding of the work and resources needed to reach network build-out, and determining the path of action that connects where we are today and a fully completed sidewalk network in Denver.

To stay informed as the project evolves, sign up for project updates here.

If you have questions or comments about the Sidewalk Implementation Plan, please send them to [email protected] or leave a voicemail on our project hotline at 720-337-6380.
