Annual Meeting, important changes to waste collection, and more...

Prepare for the Annual Meeting

As summer comes to a close, we turn our attention to the Annual Meeting of the Southern Hills Community Association. This meeting is a chance for neighbors to gather and discuss issues relevant to the neighborhood. It is also an opportunity to vote on members of the SHCA Board.

🏠 Board Openings

The Board is composed of two Directors from each filing, plus two At-Large Directors. The Board currently has three open Director positions:

  • Filing 3

  • Filing 5

  • At-Large

Several Director positions are also up for re-election:

  • Filing 2

  • Filing 4

  • Filing 6

You must live in the filing for which you’d like to serve. Figure out your filing by checking the filing map. If you are interested in a Board position, please reply to this email and let us know!

Please note that only paid members of the Southern Hills Community Association are eligible to vote for Directors. Join the SHCA now and pay your annual dues (only $25!) if you live in the neighborhood. If you live outside the Association area, please consider making a contribution, too! We also plan to collect dues at the meeting.

Solid Waste Collection Schedule Changes

Next Week

Denver will not collect compost the week of August 25, as staff works a shortened, 32-hour workweek and takes a furlough day on Friday, August 29. All collections, including compost, will resume the week of September 1 on a one-day delayed schedule, as staff observes Labor Day on Monday, September 1.

Thanksgiving

The week of November 24, Denver will not collect compost or recycling, as staff works a 24-hour workweek, observing Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 27, and the citywide furlough day on Friday, November 28.

Additionally, Thanksgiving week, Denver is asking ALL customers to set out their trash by 6 a.m. Monday, November 24 and DOTI will collect carts over the course of the 3-day workweek. Residents scheduled to receive Large Item Pickup service the week of November 24 should also set out their items by 6 a.m. Monday morning, November 24, for collection over the course of Monday through Wednesday.

Ongoing Recycling Shift in December

Following Thanksgiving - the week of December 1 - compost collection will resume, and Solid Waste will reset its recycling collection calendar as follows:

  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling Thanksgiving week (week of November 24) should set their carts out the week of December 1 instead, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.

  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling the week of December 1 should set out their recycling the week of December 8, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.

Ongoing Earlier Start Time

As part of another modification, it is making, and effectively immediately, DOTI is asking residents to set out their trash, recycling, and compost carts, and large item pickup items, by 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection day. Equipment operators are starting their day earlier, aiming to be on route earlier to better serve our city’s residents. Setting out carts the night before your collection day is also acceptable.

Updated collection schedules will display on the city’s website and Trash and Recycling App the week of December 1. Additionally, people can access this schedule change information at www.denvergov.org/trashschedule

💵 Denver People’s Budget

The People's Budget, Denver’s Participatory Budgeting Program, is a new approach to city decision-making, where people work side-by-side their government to make thoughtful community investments, together. Over the course of a year, people design the program, submit project ideas, and develop those ideas into specific project proposals. Then, the community votes for their favorites and the City constructs the winning projects! To date, more than 6,000 community members have participated and successfully budgeted $3 million toward 13 important infrastructure projects for their neighborhoods.

Each cycle of the People's Budget follows four community-led phases, starting with building a guidebook and ending with a community vote on which projects to fund. Cycle 3 of the People's Budget will begin this fall and we're recruiting community members to help lead the Program. Learn how to participate.

🏘️ Welcome to the Summer of RNO Reform!

The offices of Councilwoman Gonzales-Gutierrez and Councilman Kashmann are looking into our city’s current RNO Ordinance with hopes to strengthen our RNOs and empower our residents to engage with their neighborhoods and government. The RNO Ordinance was written in the 70s and Denver City Council recognizes the need to update the ordinance to reflect the needs of today. Our hope is to increase equity, participation, and city support to the RNO network.

BUT before we get started, we want to hear from you! Our offices are dedicated to a robust community engagement process over the course of this summer and fall, to gather data and reform the ordinance with recommendations from Denverites. We are gathering our data by asking folks to fill out a survey and hope you can fill it out too!
