Updates from Slavens School

⚠️ E-Bike Safety Reminder

We want to share an important safety reminder with our community. Recently, a young Slavens School student was struck in our neighborhood by an e-bike/motorcycle operated by an older child. The incident is a sobering reminder of the risks these vehicles can pose.

We are sharing this not to alarm, but to raise awareness. The concerns we’ve discussed around e-bikes and motorized vehicles are very real. These machines can travel at high speeds and, when not used responsibly or supervised appropriately, can create dangerous situations—especially in areas where children are walking, biking, and playing.

Please take a moment to talk with your children about safety, awareness, and responsible use. What happened in our own neighborhood reminds us that these risks are not distant—they are present right here in our community. Working together, we can help keep all of our children safe.

🚸 Become a Crossing Guard!

Do you want to help keep our students safe while making a positive impact on the Slavens community? We are looking for volunteers or paid crossing guards to assist with student safety during arrival and dismissal. This is a great way to get involved, help children keep safe, and even earn a little extra money.

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about this opportunity, please reach out to Darcie Forde at [email protected]. Your help makes a difference!

Let’s Communicate! If you have concerns, compliments, or other thoughts about Slavens, the Association can share those with the school. Reply to this email or email us at [email protected]!

Denver Water Update: Stage 1 Drought Declaration

The 2025–26 water year began with historically low snowpack, and severe drought persists across the state. Snowpack — which we depend on for our water supply — remains among the worst on record in our two primary watersheds: 55% of normal in the Colorado River Basin, the worst on record, and 42% of normal in the South Platte River Basin, the worst on record.

Given these conditions, the Denver Board of Water Commissioners declared a Stage 1 drought, which includes mandatory limits on outdoor watering. Customers are restricted to two assigned days per week. (Read more/leer más.)

While the declaration is effective immediately, there is no need to turn on automatic systems until at least mid- to late-May. It is not necessary to water grass two days a week in April and the beginning of May, and keeping these systems off will help save water. Occasional hand-watering may be necessary for trees and shrubs during this time.

Customers must also follow Denver Water’s standard summer watering rules and can expect to see increased enforcement of watering restrictions. In addition, a formal recommendation tied to drought pricing is expected to go to the Board of Water Commissioners on April 8. The temporary drought charges would place a premium on outdoor water use, and will be in customers' June water bills for water used in May. These steps will help preserve water levels in our reservoirs and reduce the likelihood of additional restrictions later this summer, as conditions are not improving.

🚌 Colorado Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit | Study/Design Phase

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), in collaboration with the Regional Transportation District, the City and County of Denver, Arapahoe County, the City of Glendale, and the Denver Regional Council of Governments, is planning to improve travel on parts of Colorado Boulevard through implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service between I-70 and the Southmoor transit station south of Hampden Avenue. BRT provides high-quality transit service by combining the capacity and efficiency of light rail with the flexibility, cost and simplicity of bus service. This project is being developed to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a law that requires agencies to assess the environmental impacts of actions and decisions funded by the federal government.

As of winter 2025/2026, the project is currently in the alternatives analysis phase, which focuses on identifying potential BRT options that will help address the corridor’s mobility and safety challenges. Building on the 2024 Colorado Boulevard Corridor Plan, specific alternatives will be presented for public comment in early 2026. Based on this feedback, one alternative, called the locally preferred alternative or LPA, will be recommended for implementation in spring 2026. Potential impacts from the recommended alternative will then be evaluated in detail over the following months by the project partners and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The project will then initiate the design phase with the intent to complete preliminary design by spring 2027. A construction start date has yet to be determined.

The spring 2026 Public Open House #2 is on Wednesday, May 13 from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 13 at Clayton Early Learning. Visit the Open House event page for more details.

🚶Denver's Sidewalk Implementation Plan

The Sidewalk Implementation Plan will detail the path forward for building and upgrading sidewalks across the city in both the short term and the long term. The purpose of the plan is to:

  • Create a prioritization framework for delivering sidewalks in a way that meets the City’s and the public’s transportation goals.

  • Create work plans for sidewalk construction, reconstruction, and repair across the city with a more detailed focus on what will be constructed in the next 6 years.

  • Establish a long-term road map for a successful program that delivers new and improved sidewalks to Denver into the future.

The Sidewalk Implementation Plan is kicking off now, with three main phases of development through the end of 2026: documenting the state of Denver’s sidewalk network today, developing an understanding of the work and resources needed to reach network build-out, and determining the path of action that connects where we are today and a fully completed sidewalk network in Denver.

To stay informed as the project evolves, sign up for project updates here.

If you have questions or comments about the Sidewalk Implementation Plan, please send them to [email protected] or leave a voicemail on our project hotline at 720-337-6380.
